Meet Sandy
Description:
With Senior to Senior (S2S) permanent fosters, it takes a senior dog being matched with a willing and able senior human to complete the equation. In this case, Sandy’s owner became ill and wouldn’t be able to return to independent living. No one in the family was able to take her in, so she was living alone with a caregiver coming in. Sandy is 12 and has age-related hearing and vision deficits, mobility issues, incontinence and weight loss. She is on medication and a special soft diet. For these reasons, she was placed in the senior foster program. Meanwhile, an AHDRO adopter was in mourning after her dog passed away recently. She wasn’t expecting AHDRO to contact her; but when she heard that Sandy was alone, she agreed to take her in temporarily. Even though the first week was rough, her foster mom told Sandy she wasn’t going anywhere. She was home.
Sandy loves the snow and going outside. She’ll do anything for a bite of bread. Sometimes Sandy softly barks and her foster mom isn’t sure why. Is she just talking or does she want something? Only time may tell. Sandy is just starting to decompress from the transition to her new home, but her personality is starting to shine. Sandy will only go up the left side of the ramp to come inside. If she’s on the right, she goes through a set maneuver to position herself on the left. Sandy has selective hearing if she’s enjoying the outdoors and doesn’t want to come in when she’s called. She loves having her back scratched and finally after four weeks, she wagged her tail when greeting someone.
Sandy has started to realize she is home once more and her foster mom says that Sandy is helping her heart to heal from her loss. Senior dogs have so much love left to give and so do their special senior fosters.
