Bentley
Description:
Bentley is a 10- to 12-year-old, tricolor collie. He was placed with AHDRO after his remaining elderly owner died. This wonderful lad with so much love and life left was in need of a new home. So often with S2S dogs, medical issues are the prevailing reason they are placed in the Senior to Senior program. Happily, this isn’t the case with Bentley.
Bentley’s permanent foster mom had another S2S dog who had passed unexpectedly a short time ago. She had told AHDRO that she’d wait awhile before taking in another senior dog, but sometimes mourning is best helped by another rescue. When Bentley needed a home, staff called her and they had his foster at “tri color male collie.” Our staff knew this was the right foster mom for Bentley. She lives in a one-level house, so he doesn’t have steps to contend with. His foster mom has about a half acre, and a quarter acre of that is fenced. Bentley must think he’s already in collie heaven!
Bentley still likes to take walks and does well on the leash. He’s tall, so he may turn out to be a counter surfer, but his foster mom is taking that in stride. She loves to watch Bentley prance when he walks. What joy they are bringing to each other!
Senior dogs are hard to place. People are concerned about future medical costs. Some are focused on the short time they may have compared with adopting a puppy. This is where Senior to Senior comes in. Matching an older person with an older dog as a permanent foster just makes good sense. Bentley’s foster mom works in the medical field and her patients are often terminal. Her view is that they, and the senior dogs, deserve to have the best life they can until the end comes. She also wrote, “I’m a sucker for seniors (dogs). Those old grey muzzles just tug on my heart strings.” If you are a senior, we welcome you to look into the details of the S2S program. If you aren’t a senior yet, we welcome your donations to this much needed program.
