Our journey of a ‘rescue’ adoption … Meet Kenzie (formerly Kayla)
My husband and I adopted Meghan, a Chow/Golden Mix over two years ago after losing our beloved Australian Shepherd to Cancer. Meghan’s background was a year of horrible abuse and neglect. After giving her love and attention for two years and gaining her trust, we thought it was time to introduce her to a new sibling. Almost Home was the first Web site that I visited and my eyes went instantly to a collie mix named Kayla. I printed off the picture and kept it in my purse for quite some time. I continued to look at various Rescue sites and always came back to Almost Home to view Kayla, the darling little Collie mix.
Almost Home brought her for a visit on a very snowy day in March. Her interaction with Meghan was playful and we knew at that moment we wanted her as part of our family! Her history was that of neglect which also consisted of mange and ringworm. Almost Home nurtured her back to health and she was well on her way to a very good home! While we will never know what truly happened to her during the early years of her life, we do know this……. Kenzie’s life (and ours) is forever changed. Her routine is now playing with her new sis, hopping in the car and going everywhere with her family, taking long walks and vacationing in Northern Michigan. (The picture says it all), boating is her new pastime.
We would also be remiss without thanking Daryl who arranged for a “quick adoption” once she saw the interaction with our family; and of course Kenzie’s “favorite” foster Mom, Miss Vicki. The personal time that Vicki gave to Kenzie immediately upon rescue was one reason we probably were able to adopt her so quickly. The Almost Home folks are to be commended for the great work they do day in and day out!
Not a moment goes by that we regret choosing a “rescue” dog. We think we saved a soul? It goes both ways!!! There are so many neglected animals that are anxiously awaiting a Meghan and Kenzie success story!
