Lily

On June 15, Lily was found along side a busy road by a local vet technician who took her to the vet’s office to have her examined. She was obviously in distress and hurt. The office called Almost Home.

We took her in immediately when we saw she needed our help. She could not walk and there was something seriously wrong with her hips. You could feel her bones grinding. She was thin and lethargic. She was giving up and in intense pain.

Upon further examination, we found this poor collie had a broken pelvis. We think she was hit by a car and left for dead on the side of the road. She was not responding well to anything.

Lily was now in our care she underwent surgery on Wednesday, June 23. She would have a long recovery and her medical bills would run just under $3,000. Through all her pain and suffering, this girl still laid her head in the lap of her foster mom and gave kisses.

Lily’s recovery was slow. Life at Almost Home rescue went on. Applications came in, potential adopters were screened, dogs came into our system and were adopted out. It didn’t seem like Lily was going anywhere anytime soon. She was slowly learning to be a dog again as she was feeling better and growing stronger.

On JUNE 28, Ann and Arthur Sockolof entered the picture. They had applied to adopt from AHDRO and were approved several weeks earlier. This New Jersey couple wanted a sable boy between 2 and 5 years old. The adoption coordinator happened to mention Lily in conversation and sent Ann her picture. It was love at first sight. As Ann said, “There was just something about that face.”

They soon decided to adopt Lily. Uniquely enough was the fact that Ann and Arthur had once owned a Collie girl who had broken her pelvis in an accident years ago. What were the chances that on Ohio dog would come into their hearts and New Jersey home facing the same recovery?

On Aug. 18, Lily was released from all medical care. She was ready to go to her new forever home to be loved and cherished for the rest of her life.

Aug. 21, the Sockolofs drove to Ohio on Saturday, Aug. 21 and Lily went home to begin her new life as a Jersey girl. Ann and Arthur have a trainer ready to welcome her into their home and are very excited about giving Lily the life she deserves. Arthur was joking that Ann would give him up before she gave up this dog!

Our Almost Home dogs deserve happy endings, and Lily certainly has hers! Thank you Ann and Arthur for taking this girl into your family.
