In Memory of Autumn

Autumn was appropriately named after the time of year in which she came to rescue. She was also in the “autumn” of her life, as her age was estimated to be eleven or so. Autumn had the distinction of being from Paris … Kentucky , that is! This regal lady was left alone, abandoned in a farm foreclosure. Autumn was a big, sweet, gentle collie with paws the size of a lion’s and a grateful heart of gold.

Dental surgery complete with root canal was donated for Autumn and publicized in the local newspaper. This added to her notoriety even more! Dr. Bater donated the operating room and Dr. Rakich DDS performed her much-needed root canal. Because of her advanced age and arthritis, though, it was necessary to add supplements and pain medications daily. Excluding food, her monthly maintenance approached nearly one hundred dollars.

Autumn’s Web-site picture was beautiful and generated a lot of interest. The cost to keep her healthy along with her advanced age proved to be a deterrent in finding a forever home. We are grateful to the many people who donated on her behalf. After a lengthy search, a decision was made to keep her in the only other home she had known, as a permanent foster. Autumn was happy, settled, and secure.

Gradually, Autumn’s health began to fail. She needed more and more help in getting around, her appetite was not good, and she was losing weight. When she awoke in the middle of the night crying, Jill, her permanent foster, took her directly to the emergency room. It was determined at that time to put her to sleep, as she was suffering.

Autumn lived a very long life by collie standards. She was well cared for and loved by all who knew her. Autumn will be sadly missed by all whose life she touched.
