Senior Dog Programs

Almost Home has always had a soft spot for senior dogs. When other rescue organizations have passed over seniors at the shelters, we have brought them in.

Pet ownership or fostering can open up a whole new world for older adults.  By adopting/ fostering or sponsoring older pets, seniors can have the companionship of a pet without housebreaking, training or cost. Almost Home is dedicated to enriching the lives of senior dogs for their entire lifetimes.

The Joys of Older Dogs: Why One Might Be Perfect For You

To maintain the highest level of care possible, we provide custom solutions for specific needs like specialty medications, special food and other items that might be needed.

Almost Home has two Programs to make sure that older dogs are provided the same care and loving support as those who are formally adopted through us.

Senior to Senior Program (S2S) and
Sponsor a Senior (SAS)

Senior to Senior (S2S) Program

Our Senior-to-Senior (S2S) Program was created to match senior citizens with senior dogs through permanent fostering homes. Many older adults cannot afford the care of a dog but would love the companionship of one. The Almost Home S2S program takes care of all of these expenses: medical examinations, medicines and food.  In exchange, the caregiver provides a safe home for our dog, exercise him/her, perform basic brushing and transport the dog for vet appointments.

While having a geographically dispersed network of foster homes, our S2S program is managed in Central Ohio. The bulk of our supporting resources are housed in this area. We gladly accept applicants from interested parties living within a 2 ½ hour drive, in any direction, from Columbus.

We know that everyone benefits from the companionship, care-giving, love and joy of owning a pet. The Almost Home S2S program brings that and much more to both Seniors, people and dogs.

Sponsor a Senior (SAS) Program

Some people want to help but now is not the right time to adopt or foster a senior dog. We understand and we have a program designed for you, our Sponsor a Senior (SAS) Program.

Our Sponsor a Senior Program is specifically designed for the needs of senior dogs. Elderly dogs have many of the same issues and problems we do as we age. Many of them are arthritic or may have an illness such as Cushing’s Disease. Some may have digestive problems and need special food.  Addressing these problems is not inexpensive.

We value sponsors as an integral part of fulfilling our mission. When you sign up to Sponsor a Senior with a monthly donation, Almost Home will send you periodic updates on your dog. After contributing $100, you’ll also receive an Almost Home gray hoodie with the AHDRO logo. When you wear it, you will be showing your friends and relatives how your generosity is helping dogs live their last years comfortable, loved and pain-free. We must have a way to contact you to determine your size and mailing address.

You may also decide to make a one time donation, either to the general S2S fund or for a specific dog.  For a minimum of $100, you will also receive a gray hoodie. As above, we need a way to contact you for your size and mailing address.

Our sponsors are saving the lives of precious senior dogs. Please join them in fulfilling Almost Home’s goal of having loved and pain free senior years for the dogs in our care.
