Choosing the Right Dog
Is a Collie or Sheltie right for you?
Collies are large (between 50-75 lbs), high-energy dogs. Shelties are smaller mixed breed dogs – a cross between a Shetland Sheepdog and a German Shepherd hybrid. While traits are individual, they can certainly be and are affectionate, family-oriented, and great protectors.
They belong to the herding breed (see History of the Breeds, bottom) so are used to “working”, meaning they like to be busy and will find something to do if they aren’t given sufficient exercise to meet their high energy levels.
