Meet Winnie
On 10/30/19 AHDRO received this request:
"Our shelter recently took in a senior Rough Collie in bad shape. She was left outside of a local rescue facility’s building overnight so we have no history on her whatsoever. After a bath and quick grooming session to get rid of most of her matted fur, she is finally up and walking around and eating. She weighs only 34 pounds, has ear infections, awful teeth, and has difficulty standing for long periods of time. If you have any space, or any other questions, please reach out. Thanks in advance!" Shelter in Kentucky.
On 10/30/19 Cheryl Rakich emailed the AHDRO team: I am forwarding this because my heart is breaking for this sweet, sweet girl that doesn't deserve the hand she was dealt. We were on an intake hold because we have so many dogs; however, this email just came in and we cannot...not help. Cindy is gathering information now. Her eyes are haunting and begging for comfort.
On 11/5/19 VCA provided a Winnie update. She truly is the epitome of rescue and she ignites that rescue warrior in all of us. She is too fragile/weak to get vaccines and her left ear is so badly infected that she needs to be anesthetized to clean it because it is so painful and so deep in the canal. Her right eye is moderately infected as are her teeth. I can't imagine the pain she has been in for far too long. She is on antibiotics. We did a senior panel, fecal, and ear cytology that were all sent out and pending at this time. Once she gains some weight, rids her body of parasites and pending her lab results, she will go to surgery for a dental and possible spay and debridement of her ear.

Description:
Please consider helping.
After almost 3 weeks of hospital care on Dec 2, 2019, she came to her permanent foster family. Still frail and oh so thin she is beginning to gain strength and a little weight.
Winnie's favorite parts of the day are breakfast, lunch, and dinner! She has an extremely healthy appetite and always cleans her bowl. She eats more than her 65-pound collie brother and on Jan 14 Was only up to 41 pounds. We are hoping for more in February.
She has a wonderful plaid winter coat to keep her warm and she seems to enjoy wearing it. She walks slowly and some days can get off the one porch step by herself. Other times she needs a little help. She is on arthritis medication, thyroid and we also have added supplements (fish oil & glucosamine) to her meals. She seems to have some hearing loss and is going to have her vision evaluated because she has difficulty navigating in the dar
It's amazing that with her stilted gait she can get around the yard at a pretty good pace when she wants to. She is curious about the kitties in the house and the chickens who live outside. She loves her fluffy bed, being petted and brushed.
We have no idea what she endured or for how long. But thanks to AHDRO she is now safe and loved. She is HOME, loved, cherished, and given the care she needs.
As you can see, her vet costs, ongoing medical care, and medications are significant, but we could not abandon her in a shelter risking euthanization because of her age and health issues. If Winnie's story tugs at your heart, could you help her by sponsoring her or giving a one-time gift in her name? It will help Almost Home continue to help dogs like Winnie.
This lovely girl is still full of life and is a treasured member of her permanent foster family.
