Description:
Roxy is a young merle collie who is just finding out what it is like to live in a family home. She arrived scared and wary, but in spite of her fears she is learning to trust and love people. In the short time she has been with her foster she is learning to judge and respond to other dogs’ cues (time to play, go away) and is starting to play bow to initiate play. She was initially afraid of the backyard, but now she happily zooms around the fenced-in yard, is more engaged with the other dogs and will go after a ball. She is very aware of her foster dad and notices if he goes back into the house. She will now walk on a short leash, but Roxy is leery of new noises or sights and reacts to loud noises by hiding/freezing. Her world is getting wider day by day, but it takes patience and thought to help her navigate all of the new experiences. We marked her as house trained because she has only had one accident in the last two weeks.
Inside she is calm and seems to recognize her name. She enjoys being close to her foster family and can be found on the couch next to them. Roxy responds to “no” as she learns house manners, and then she consistently avoids that undesired behavior. She does seem to feel like she has some ownership and responsibility in her foster home and has barked to alert the fosters of an approach or unfamiliar noise, but Roxy relaxes when she is told, “it’s fine,” responding well to verbal reassurance. She has interacted with teenagers that she met and has let strangers pet her, although she is still a bit wary. Because of her cautiousness, she needs a fenced-in yard so she can run with abandon but also be contained -- her fear might make her not return if something spooks her. Roxy is sweet and seems to have a beautiful soul. Her journey to “family dog” is just beginning. Roxy needs a collie/dog-savvy owner who understands her and will patiently and lovingly help her conquer her fears and become a confident companion.
Note: Needs a physically fenced yard.
