There is a bill pending in the Ohio Senate, S.B.95, commonly known as the puppy mill bill. There are problems with the way this bill is written. Almost Home supports a substitute for this bill called McKenzie’s Law. The details of both can be viewed at:
To summarize, McKenzie’s Law targets commercial dog breeders and protects hobby breeders. It does not propose to create a large government bureaucracy and welcomes the support of local dog wardens and humane agents.
Cheryl Rakich on behalf of Almost Home supports this law:
"Almost Home Dog Rescue of Ohio unanimously supports all efforts to ban dog auctions in the state of Ohio. These dog auctions perpetuate the “puppy mill” commercial enterprise, which is run by high volume breeders that house dogs in filthy, cramped inhumane conditions. These dogs exist with no medical care, no exercise and no socialization. These auctions support and patronize this vile business and therefore should be outlawed."
How can you help this law pass? Contact your local legislator whose address can be found at the website above. Send them a copy of McKenzie’s Law and urge them to support it as a substitute for S.B. 95
Almost Home heavily relies on donations to be able to continue our rescue. Quite often, the cost to rescue a dog far exceeds our requested adoption fee.

Adopt a Dog
Please ask your friends to adopt dogs from shelters or rescues rather than buying them from pet stores. A dog is killed due to the lack of a home approximately every 9 seconds ... adopting rescue or shelter dogs will help to reduce the number of dogs euthanized in shelters; it will also reduce the demand for puppies bred for sale in pet stores in the inhumane conditions of puppy mills.
