Dexter's Forever Home

March 22, 2009. Five weeks ago, on Valentine's Day (how appropriate!) my husband Gary and I drove east and adopted three-year-old Dexter (known as 'Pete' while in foster care) from Almost Home Ohio Rescue. His new home is here in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Simply, we love him. Dexter melded with the two of us, our 9-year-old lab-mix and our three cats right away. He fits our lives and lifestyle like a glove.

Dexter dog has definitely made his own unique niche in our home! Everyone - and I mean everyone - who has met him, adores him. Amazing. Even our 9-year-old labrador-mix, Roz, who is sometimes picky about what dogs she associates with. Roz and Dexter have become best of friends, playing together every evening with a toy selection that Dex drags out of their toy box. Their favorite is tug-of-war with a pair of old socks tied together. And he LOVES playing with any ball we give him. Gary and I love to watch them play together and the extra activity has been so unexpectedly good for Roz as it's been helping to restrengthen her back leg muscles which have been weakened due to ACL (ligament) damage. She has regained that fun gleam in her eyes which shines each time they play.

Dexter and Roz eat almost side by side with no problems from either one. He has a great appetite. They go for their two daily walks together, Roz walking on the right side, Dex on the left. They ride together as pals in the backseat of our cars, again Roz on the right, Dex on the left. He has the whole daily routine of our house down now, too, which is making him feel pretty important these days! After arriving in our Minnesota home from Ohio, the first few work days he seemed truly devastated that he could not go with Gary each morning as Gary left for work. It tore our hearts to see his little face go from excited to sad when we'd each in turn have to tell him to stay behind with Roz and the cats. Now, I'm happy to report, he is very ok with all that.

Recently there was a big night for Dex! We and Roz took him into his first PetSmart store. He got to test out dog beds and walk down the doggie treat isle with Gary and see other dogs with their owners.

He truly is doing great all around. We continue to work with him daily on not pulling while walking and that problem is very slowly starting to show improvement. Dexter's car fixation is almost a thing of the past; that little weird habit has been easy to fix as I think he takes many of his cues from Roz who is very city savvy and relaxed.

Gary and I are going to try to make the Almost Home Rescue 2009 June reunion part of our vacation plans. If that works out, we and the two dogs will see you all then!

Thanks for all you do for these wonderful dogs! Amy and Gary Thorsett

Almost Home heavily relies on donations to be able to continue our rescue. Quite often, the cost to rescue a dog far exceeds our requested adoption fee.

Adopt a Dog

Please ask your friends to adopt dogs from shelters or rescues rather than buying them from pet stores. A dog is killed due to the lack of a home approximately every 9 seconds ... adopting rescue or shelter dogs will help to reduce the number of dogs euthanized in shelters; it will also reduce the demand for puppies bred for sale in pet stores in the inhumane conditions of puppy mills.
