In Memory of Buddy, Penny, and Zackie

We lost our Buddy at 12 years old.

Exactly three weeks apart last month, we lost Penny, our tri-color, and Zackie, our white/sable. Penny was to be 13 in February and Zackie would have been 11 on 3/15. Both deaths were sudden ... within 24 hours of knowing something was wrong. As you can well imagine, there's still a lot of grief in our home. Below I've attached a number of pics of my best friends.

Penny and Buddy

Buddy (and Penny, Abby and Emily) came to live with us as fuzzy little pups from Wolfe Manor Collies in Hesperia, MI. Zackie, the big white/sable was taken in to avoid him ending up in a shelter. Buddy's parents (as well as Pen's, Abby's and Emmy's) were all champions and the pictures of Buddy say it all.

Buddy was the most curious of collies. He needed to be involved in whatever I was doing and, if it was something down at his level, with perked ears and quizzical expression, he would put his big black collie nose between my hands to see and sniff what I was working on and would usually stay there until asked to move over.

It was his job to "help" me with whatever I was doing. Buddy was very fond of red raspberries and could be counted on to pick and eat his share. I can still picture him gently picking berries with his little front collie teeth and then munching them down.

Every work day I sit on the second step of the staircase to put on my shoes and every workday for over 11 years, Buddy, Penny and Zackie would stand in front of me, shoulder to shoulder so I could take turns loving on them before leaving for the day. Every night I could sleep assured that if I awoke during the night, there would be three collies on the dog beds and carpet, staying close to their people. The loss of all three has been more than difficult.

Penny at only 6 months

The loss of Buddy lead to a Web search for collie rescues and that is how I found AHDRO and that resulted in Robbie/Rob Roy/aka Elliot coming to live with us. After seeing the faces and reading their stories, I decided that I would rescue all future friends. On a happy note, Robbie continues to progress in bonding and for the last two mornings he has come to the staircase to be loved on as I put on my shoes. The tradition continues ...

Handsome Buddy

You've heard the expression "sweet sorrow"? Well, this concentrated remembrance of these guys has made if obvious that there's grieving left to be done. There will be a crowd at that Rainbow Bridge. Little momma Penny will be the one to spot me first and let the others know I've arrived.
