Keeper is a delightful young sheltie who has had a tough life. He was rescued from an unhealthy situation and has some mobility issues which are improving daily.
Outside in the grass you might not suspect he has any difficulty moving because where there is more traction, he is able to run and play chase with the other dogs in the household. Birds and squirrels provide a delightful challenge and he loves chasing them. He runs after toys and stuffed animals and is learning to bring the toy back to you. Smooth, hard surfaces are more challenging but even there he has made remarkable improvements. He can now walk a block on the leash (and goes a little further each day) and he still sometimes needs a little boost to get up. His resilience is amazing and he never gives up. He doesn’t know he has a problem so he doesn’t let it get in the way of his enjoyment of life.
Keeper has been swimming to increase his muscle mass in his legs and his veterinarians and foster family are excited about his increase in strength and endurance. He has also been getting chiropractic and laser treatments.
He loves to cuddle and is a tiny fellow, only 18 pounds, so it is easy to accommodate his desire to be close and to be held. Although he enjoys playing with the other dogs in the family, he loves people the best. He is curious and happy —we can tell because of his tail, it is often wagging with joy. He does bark and howl when he gets very excited, but that does not happen often. We have not seen him around cats or small children, but seems to enjoy children when he meets them during his walks. He really enjoys his foster doggie siblings but in his forever home would need a gentle laid back canine companion because he is not allowed to roughhouse, it might cause further injury. He will never be able to navigate stairs and if there are stairs, provision would need to be made so he could not access them.
Treats are a special delight for him and he is doing well with his leash training and other commands.
His perfect forever family might have someone who is home during the day so they can keep an eye on him and help him as needed. You will never be lonely with Keeper around. He will stick right by your side. He will adore you with his eyes and his presence in your life and in your arms. His past was tough but he has overcome so many obstacles and his future is looking very bright.
