Summitt lived most of his life with an elderly couple who owned an orchard. He was the official ‘greeter’ and everyone loved him. Unfortunately, the elderly couple fell on hard times and were not able to continue caring for him. A caring groomer in the area rescued him and that is how he ended up in the loving care of Almost Home!
We picked up Summitt after he made his journey from Tennessee to Ohio. From the moment we met this guy, it was obvious he is the sweetest dog. Of his many attributes, here are just a few: He’s loving, gentle and kind. He likes dogs, cats and kids! Summitt’s foster family has a cat that doesn’t usually come out of the lower level when they have other foster dogs. There must be something about Summitt’s calm demeanor that allowed their cat to be comfortable with him – so she’s always close by now. He has spent a lot of time with the foster’s grandsons and is very good with them. They have only heard him bark a couple of times and have said he NEVER growls or complains.
He loves his slow leisurely walks – never pulls on leash – just moves down the road/sidewalk/path -sniffing absolutely everything he can. He’s slightly interested in the squirrels but doesn’t chase them. Summitt has not been crated and he has been perfect. He’ll let his foster family know when he wants out by standing at the door and patiently waiting. Never any accidents in the house.
Until recently, he’s not been very playful. Now he will run a bit (gallop is more like it) and will try to herd his people! He is constantly nudging to get petted and loved on. He also will use his head to nudge for the same reason. He absolutely loves to be brushed, petted and hugged.
He has had leg surgery to help with an old injury and a dental. He has been very compliant in all areas. He appears to handle whatever has been thrown at him without a whine or whimper. There are no restrictions for this guy. His leg has healed nicely (although may be stiff for a while yet). He’s missing quite a few teeth but that doesn’t keep him from eating. He’s on a regular diet and looks forward to his meals.
Summitt would be a wonderful companion for someone ready for the love and loyalty of a great dog!
Check out how wonderful Summitt is with kids and puppies!
