Thought you might like to hear how Gabe is doing. He is the best dog and so smart. I am so very thankful for him. Unless I tell people, they cannot tell he is blind. He looks right at you when you talk to him and he loves to be talked to; almost like he wants to talk back.
He loves to have his ears rubbed but will only let me groom him about 15 minutes at a time then he kicks me away with his back feet. He loves to go on walks and does very well on a leash. He pretty much stays right by me. He had an ulcer in his right eye in January and had him at an ophthalmologist once a week for about 6 weeks. The vet said it is very common in dogs. I had never heard of it. She cured him and confirmed he does have detached retinas in both eyes and cannot see at all.
When I’m in the kitchen cooking, he likes to push himself between me and the cabinet — the little beggar. He know most commands — sit, shake, no bark — come (although recently he is a little stubborn and comes when he wants); we are working on down. His favorite toy is anything stuffed especially with if it squeaks– he will grab it up and run around carrying it in his mouth.
I’m thinking Gabe would be a good therapy dog. He doesn’t get startled in new places or with new people.
